چکیده

This report deals with the analysis of the performance of different versions of the wide spread Transport Control Protocol (TCP) over 3G UMTS networks. This analysis is done through simulations executed on the Network Simulator version 2 (NS2) and its Enhanced UMTS Radio Access Network Extension (EURANE). Different tool enhancements were developed in order to make this project possible. This paper starts with explaining the main UMTS networks and TCP functionalities. Then, the performance of the most common TCP versions is analyzed with data transfer on the common channels only. Afterwards, the case of WEB traffic with a possible dedicated channel allocation is described. The impact of several parameters is analyzed. This last set of simulations is first done using a single non-preemptive inactivity timer for the DCH de-allocation, and then with hybrids preemptive/non-preemptive inactivity timers.

Performance Evaluation of TCP over UMTS Transport Channels

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation cellular network that enables high-speed wireless Internet access. It can provide maximum data-rates ranging from 64kb/s to 2Mb/s in different environmental types. UMTS is designed to provide access to the existing Internet services as well as to UMTS specific services. It will augment the existing capabilities of 2G mobile...

Performance Evaluation of UMTS for Mobile Internet Access

UMTS constitutes the third generation of cellular wireless networks which aims to provide high-speed data access along with real time voice calls (Holma & Toskala, 2001). Wireless data is one of the major boosters of wireless communications and one of the main challenges of next generation standards (Chaudhury & Mohr, 1999). It can provide maximum data-rates ranging from 64kb/s to 2Mb/s in diff...

On the Performance of TCP Vegas over UMTS/WCDMA Channels with Large Round-Trip Time Variations

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation cellular network that enables high-speed mobile Internet access. This paper evaluates and compares the performance of two wellknown versions of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), namely, Vegas and Reno, in a UMTS environment. Bulk data transfer was considered in the simulation with varying radio channel conditions. We ass...

Performance Analysis of the Umts System for Packet Data Transfer over Dedicated Channels

This paper addresses the UMTS system performance analysis over dedicated channels based on buffer length allocation and dynamic allocation control procedures. Throughput and access delay for packet data transmission is evaluated as a function of network load for both of the allocation procedures. A mathematical model, which can be used to analyze the throughput of UMTS dedicated channel, is pro...
